Research Lead

AMALI Urban Governance Lab

Amy Weimann is the Research Lead for the Urban Governance Research Lab as part of the African Mayoral Leadership Initiative. She is an urban health researcher with a background in urban geography, and holds a PhD in Public Health from the University of Cape Town’s School of Public Health and Family Medicine.

Her research interests and expertise include:

  • Strengthening the means of implementation to support the development of healthy and sustainable cities
  • Cross-sector data integration for creating new urban health data and knowledge
  • Exploring opportunities to incorporate health considerations into non-health sector policies at the African regional and South African national levels

Previously, she was part of a small team invited by the World Health Organization (WHO) to develop a general framework for national action to strengthen implementation mechanisms for the development of healthy and sustainable cities. This work directly informed the WHO guidelines for member states to develop national programmes for age-friendly cities and communities.

Weimann previously worked in local government at the City of Cape Town collating, integrating, and analysing various city-level datasets. She was part of the local government team leading the analysis of the 2011 South African Census for Cape Town, which included developing suburb-level profiles for the metropolitan area. She has also developed local monitoring indices comprising demographic, socio-economic, and health information.
