Davis Mwamfupe

Lord Mayor of Dodoma city, Tanzania

Professor Davis Mwamfupe is the Mayor of Dodoma City, the new capital of the United Republic of Tanzania. He was first elected in July 2017, and re-elected in October 2020. He received his Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Arts at the University of Dar es Salaam and obtained his doctorate degree from the University of Glasgow in Scotland in 1994. Since then he has lectured at the University of Dar es Salaam and the University of Dodoma, before retiring in 2016.

Since taking office Mayor Mwamfupe is proud to have taken an active role in the implementation of capital shift from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma City. As a new capital city, the Mayor is working to place Dodoma on the world map. He has been part of the leadership that strives to ensure the orderly growth of Dodoma City, which now has the lowest proportion of unplanned settlements among cities in the country. He is also working side by side with the national government in the Greening Dodoma campaign, which focuses on planting trees in and around the city. Furthermore, as a member of ICLEI he is also focused on finding nature-based solutions to the effects of climate change and the rapid growth of the city. Under his leadership the City Council of Dodoma has made significant effort to promote key investments deemed necessary to accommodate the growing demand for improved social services in the city. Mayor Mwamfupe’s leadership is also focused on improving the quality of education in the city and its neighboring communities, with nearly a quarter of the council’s annual budget allocated to the education sector.
