Manuel de Araújo

Mayor of Quelimane Municipality, Mozambique

Mr Manuel de Araújo is Mayor of Quelimane, the fifth-largest city in Mozambique and the economic, political, and administrative capital of the Zambézia province. He is Vice-President for Africa of ICLEI and a member of ICLEI’s Global Executive Committee (GexCom).

In 2019 he was elected Deputy Chair of the National Council of the Mozambican Mayors Association (ANAMM) and became a member of the Transport Decarbonisation Alliance (TDA) Steering Committee. Mayor Araújo was previously a Member of Parliament and Deputy Chair of the Foreign Affairs Portfolio Committee in the Mozambican Parliament. He was educated in Mozambique (BA), Zimbabwe (MA), and the UK (MA and PhD), and worked for Amnesty International in London as Campaign Coordinator for the Policing and Human Rights in Southern African Project.

Prior to that he was a campaigner for Africa’s Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries. He is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at the Catholic University of Mozambique and was the Founder and Chairman of the Centre for Mozambican and International Studies. Mayor Araújo was elected Lusophone Personality of the Year 2018 by the International Lusophone Movement..
