Queen Omagano Kamati

Mayor of Windhoek, Namibia

Her Worship, Councillor Queen Omagano Kamati, the distinguished Mayor of Windhoek, Namibia, is a visionary leader with a strong academic background and a proven track record of accomplishments. Born in the Omukondo-Ongozi villages of the Okahao Constituency in the Omusati region, she was raised in Ogongo Agricultural College and Oshakati West, Northern Namibia. Her academic achievements include a Bachelor of Business Management Honours, a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, a Diploma in Marketing and Sales from the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), and a certificate in Compliance Management from the University of Cape Town (UCT). She is currently pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management with the Stellenbosch Business School in South Africa, underscoring her commitment to continuous learning and personal growth.

Before assuming the esteemed position of Mayor on 1 December 2023, Councillor Kamati’s professional journey showcased her expertise in urban planning and development. Her hands-on experience includes significant contributions to the Development Bank of Namibia (DBN) in Marketing and Corporate Communications, as well as the Credit Risk Department, and serving as the Personal Assistant to the former Deputy Minister of Labour, Industrial Relations, and Employment Creation.

Her political journey began in 2006 when she joined the SWAPO Party and swiftly ascended through various positions, including serving as the Regional Secretary for Information, Publicity, and Mobilization for the SWAPO Party Youth League (SPYL) in Khomas Region. She joined the Municipal Council of Windhoek in December 2020 and served on the Council’s Management Committee in 2023 before being elected as Mayor. As Mayor, she governs the Windhoek Mayoral Residents Trust, which provides aid to the most vulnerable in the Windhoek communities.

Mayor Kamati’s leadership style is characterized by a forward- thinking approach, leveraging innovative solutions to address the unique challenges facing Windhoek. Her tenure has been marked by transformative initiatives focusing on smart urban planning, infrastructure development, and community well- being. She is an active contributor to the City of Windhoek Council structures, serving on subcommittees like Provision
of Basic Services, Economic Development, Public Safety and Citizens Welfare, Audit and Risk, and the Heritage Committee as well as Chairs the External Relations, Mayoral Affairs and Cooperation Committees. She also represents the City as a trustee to the Retirement Fund for Local Authorities and Utility Services in Namibia (RFLAUN).

Beyond her official responsibilities, Mayor Kamati is deeply engaged with the community, fostering a sense of unity and collaboration. She is known for her participatory approach, involving residents in decision-making processes to ensure that the city’s development aligns with the aspirations of its diverse population. Additionally, she often collaborates with local artists and cultural organizations to showcase the rich heritage of Namibia, adding a vibrant cultural dimension to the city. As a youthful leader, she brings to the mayorship a passion for youth engagement, promoting the implementation of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the local level, and championing initiatives to improve sanitation throughout the city.
