Rohey Malick Lowe
Mayor of Banjul, Gambia
Rohey Malick Lowe has become a trailblazer in Gambian politics as the first female mayor of the capital city. She was elected as the Mayor of the City of Banjul in May 2018 and was re-elected to the mayoral seat after a resounding victory at the hotly contested May 2023 polls. Her second term reaffirmed her popularity and the trust Banjulians placed in her leadership.
Before entering politics, Rohey established successful businesses in the tourism sector across several African cities. Her entrepreneurial ventures deepened her understanding of economic development and prepared her for public service. This experience shaped her priorities in empowering women and youth through skills-building and entrepreneurship. Since coming into office, the mayor has spearheaded efforts to improve waste management systems and modernize public infrastructure, creating a cleaner and more sustainable city.
An esteemed gender activist, she founded the Rohey Malick Lowe Women and Girls Empowerment Initiative that invests in women’s financial independence and empowers youth to contribute to national socio-economic development. She has championed projects like “Greening the City Center of Banjul,” planting trees to combat climate change and coastal erosion. Among other prestigious positions and leadership awards, she is the 2nd Vice Chairperson of the Global Parliament of Mayors, President of the Network of Local Elected Women of Africa known by its French acronym Refela and 2nd Vice President of the United Democratic Party.
