Rosaria Mangoma

Mayor of Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe

Rosaria Mangoma was unanimously elected as the Mayor of Chitungwiza Municipality in November 2023, making her the first female councillor to rise to the position in the Zimbabwean town. This groundbreaking feat started with her initial election as ward 22 councillor in the August 2023 elections, where she diligently served her community. Her political career was influenced by her parents and many other women who have defied societal stereotypes to successfully lead different organisations.

Since assuming office, she has worked tirelessly with fellow councillors and management to ensure that residents receive access to quality services to make Chitungwiza a thriving and vibrant town. Mayor Mangoma has prioritised infrastructure development, waste management, and public health initiatives, recognising the importance of a well-functioning city in improving the lives of its residents. Under her tenure, traffic lights were installed and there are ongoing roads and sewer rehabilitation projects in sewer hotspots around the town. Through her leadership, the city has intensified waste management interventions working in collaboration with the civil and private sector.

A core aspect of Mayor Mangoma’s work is championing women’s rights and their empowerment. Through this, the Chitungwiza Gender Desk has rolled out various initiatives in the town to support girls’ access to education.
