Sakaja Arthur Johnson

Governor of Nairobi City County, Kenya

Elected in August 2022 he is working at restoring Nairobi to its former glory, the Green City under the Sun.In his two years as Governor, he has initiated various projects across the city in a bid to bring Order, Dignity, Hope and Opportunity for all. This includes the School Feeding programme, Dishi na County, which feeds over 200,000 students in public primary schools a hot meal every school day.

He served as the immediate former Senator of Nairobi, previously as a nominated member of the National Assembly and Chairperson of the ruling party (2013 – 2017). During his tenure in Parliament, he served as Chairman of the standing committee on Labour and Social Welfare and the Vice Chairman standing committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations in the Senate. Governor Sakaja also served as the Chairperson of the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association (KYPA) and distinguished himself as a legislator addressing the most contentious issues of the Nation.

He has been nominated among the top 100 Future Leaders: The World’s Most Influential Young people in Government (2018) by Apolitica and awarded Change Maker of the year 2016 at the African Achievers Award, in recognition of his leadership skills and youth empowerment in Kenya.The Governor has co-authored a book in collaboration with the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ – Kenya Chapter) on Representation and Fiscal Decentralization, having particularly written on the Operational Framework for Devolution in Kenya.

At Parliament, both in the National Assembly and the Senate, his achievements include:

  • Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO)
    Bill – sponsored the Public Procurement and Disposal (Amendment) Bill providing for 30% procurement opportunities to be reserved for women, youth and persons with disabilities of all the government tenders and contracts.

  • Formulated and sponsored the National Employment Authority Act.

  • Supported the Private Security Regulation Bill – regulating private security sector.

  • Sponsored the Disaster Risk Management Bill.

  • Sponsored the Startup Bill to support innovative start-ups.

  • Sponsored the Prompt Payment Bill to ensure timely payment to suppliers in the Public and Private sectors.

  • Sponsored the Pandemic Response and Management Bill.

  • Tabled a legislative proposal on National School Lunch Feeding Program Bill.

    Hon. Sakaja Arthur Johnson now leads the regions’ economic hub on the mantra; A City of Order, Dignity, Hope and Opportunity for all.
