Theresa Kolala

Mayor of Kasama, Zambia

Theresa Kolala was elected the Mayor of Kasama, Northern Province, Zambia, in August 2021. She has a distinguished background in political science, community service, and professional experience. Her political journey began in 2001 when she joined the political scene in Kitwe, laying the foundation for her noteworthy contribution across various tiers of government.

She has served as a member of the Constitution Review Commission Committee at District, Provincial and National level, working in the following thematic groups: Human Rights; Politics and Elections, specifically the 50%+1 clause; Local Governance; Political Party Communication and Mobilization, Leadership Skills and Party Mobilization; Economic Policy Formulation; Diplomatic and International Relations; and Women’s Political Leadership Programme.

A renowned gender activist, Mayor Kolala is a Committee Member for the Local Government Gender Executive Committee and an appointed Member of the Central Committee since 2022. Through her stewardship, Kasama Municipal Council has been at the forefront of promoting gender equality and inclusive local governance, evidenced through the various initiatives she has supported during her tenure. This is tied to concerted efforts that emphasise collaboration and participation across political parties to advance service delivery. Mayor Kolala is leading the vision to ensure Kasama becomes a “an Inclusive Green City by 2031”. A team builder, mobiliser and strategic thinker, she holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Hill-City University in Benin Republic and a Diploma in Practical Bookkeeping and Accounts, where she achieved high merit.
