Investment in African Cities Crucial for Economic Growth: A highlight from AMALI 2024 Reunion Event

President William Ruto of Kenya Calls for Urban Development to Propel African Economies

Nairobi, Kenya, October 2024 – The recent AMALI 2024 Reunion in Nairobi brought together mayors and governors from across Africa, with His Excellency Dr William Ruto, President of Kenya, leading the charge in advocating for increased investment in African cities. This three-day event, organised by the African Mayoral Leadership Initiative (AMALI), served as a vital platform for discussing the transformative role of urban areas in driving economic growth and development across the continent. Through key presentations, discussions, and site visits to both Nairobi and Kajiado, the AMALI cohort of mayors and governors was invigorated to continue advancing their visions for their respective cities

AMALI’s Mission to Support African City Leadership

The African Mayoral Leadership Initiative (AMALI) is a transformative platform that equips mayors and city leaders from across the continent with the skills, resources, and networks needed to navigate the complexities of urbanisation. AMALI focuses on fostering economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability within African cities. The 2024 Reunion event in Nairobi brought together the AMALI City Leadership Programme’s 2024 cohort, which included prominent Kenyan figures such as Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson and Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku. The AMALI delegation was joined by the former First Lady of Namibia, Monica Geingos, and Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Shariff Nassir for a meeting with President H.E. The Urgent Need for Urban Investment

“Africa’s future is urban. However, the type of urban areas we get in Africa is our choice. Depending on the decisions leaders make today, people will either live in smart, liveable cities or they will live in slums,” President Ruto told the AMALI delegates. He stressed that strategic investments in infrastructure, housing, and public services are essential for creating cities that are engines of growth and innovation.

With Africa experiencing unprecedented levels of urbanisation, cities are poised to become cultural and economic hubs. For example, in Kenya, approximately 30% of the population resides in urban areas, a figure expected to rise to 50% by 2030 and 65% by 2050. This rapid urban growth highlights the critical need for cities to be well-managed and adequately resourced to support their expanding populations. President Ruto affirmed his commitment to supporting all Kenyan cities, regardless of political affiliations, to ensure they have the resources they need to thrive.

Preserving Public Spaces and Building Sustainable Cities

Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson echoed the President’s sentiments, stressing the importance of preserving public spaces amidst increasing urbanisation. He highlighted significant strides made in Nairobi, including the reclamation of 47 km of riparian reserves and the involvement of over 20,000 youths in ongoing cleaning initiatives. Governor Sakaja stated, “The massive undertaking, supported by President Ruto, to clean up the Nairobi River and create a 27.2 km long greenway connecting the city through pedestrian and cycle paths will improve liveability, promote economic growth, and generate jobs.” This initiative not only enhances the city’s environment but also fosters a sense of community and well-being among its residents.

Education as a Pillar of Urban Development

Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku also shared his insights during the AMALI 2024 Reunion, focusing on the critical need for quality education in urbanising areas. He remarked, “Providing children with access to education isn’t just about building schools and hiring teachers — though those are critically important. It is also about understanding the barriers that prevent parents from sending their children to school.” Governor Lenku emphasised the importance of collaboration between government, parents, and community partners to ensure that as families migrate from rural to urban settings, their children are seamlessly integrated into the education system.

Collective Leadership for a Sustainable Urban Future

The discussions at the AMALI 2024 Reunion reflect a growing recognition among African leaders of the need for a collective effort to address the challenges and opportunities presented by urbanisation. As cities continue to evolve, the commitment to sustainable development, public space preservation, and quality education will be vital in shaping a prosperous future for Africa.

In conclusion, the AMALI 2024 Reunion served as a powerful reminder of the essential role that well-planned and well-resourced cities play in shaping Africa’s future. The call for investment in African cities is not just a plea for financial resources; it is a vision for a sustainable, inclusive, and thriving urban landscape that can propel the continent towards its economic potential. With the support of initiatives like AMALI, African cities are well-positioned to become engines of growth, driving the continent toward a prosperous and sustainable future.
