Dar Es Salaam City Council, Tanzania
Nurdin Bilal Juma was elected Mayor of the Dar es Salaam City Council in December 2025 after receiving resounding support from his colleagues. He rose to the mayoral position after winning the councillor seat for Mchikichini Ward as a member of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM). Before joining politics, he had a prolific career as one of Tanzania’s most successful artists and entertainers, widely known to his fans as Shetta. He is celebrated for his contributions to bongo flava music. Upon his election, Mayor Juma committed to creating employment opportunities for youth, women, and special groups through skills development and improved access to capital. This builds on earlier work he undertook as a gender and youth activist in Tanzania. In March 2019, he launched SAWA, an initiative aimed at supporting government efforts to end violence and abuse against women, and strengthening social welfare and community development systems. Mayor Nurdin Bilal Juma is a strong advocate for public accountability, good governance, and community engagement. These principles are central to his leadership style as he works to improve the quality of life for Dar es Salaam residents in partnership with civil society, the private sector, and all levels of government.
