Peter Alex Banda assumed the mayoral seat of Lilongwe City Council in November 2025, making him one of the youngest people to lead Malawi’s capital city. He is the Councillor for Ntandire-Mtsiriza ward, and is dedicated to promoting development, and building a healthier, more vibrant and liveable Lilongwe. Since his election, Mayor Banda has championed a cleaner, safer and more sustainable environment. He launched Operation Yeletsa Lilongwe, a city-wide initiative designed to transform waste management systems and encourage strong community participation. He has engaged and rallied a wide range of stakeholders to rally behind the campaign and has emphasised the importance of civic education for long lasting solutions.
